The Authors League Fund helps authors and dramatists by providing them with interest-free loans when they face illness, eviction, and other crises. “We are particularly concerned with older writers whose income has ceased through no fault of their own,” says Sarah Heller, executive director. “Our Fund exists to help writers continue their careers, even their lives, with dignity—however unfortunate their circumstances.”

A generation of students is grateful to Donald M. Murray, a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer and retired professor of journalism at the University of New Hampshire. A gifted teacher and writing coach, Murray is the author of many influential articles and books about writing, including A Writer Teaches Writing (Heinle, 2003). He has been an inspiration to me—and countless other writers—for years.
